Green Hosting - Interview Questions and Answers

Hi Luke, It's nice to meet you. Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself and Super green hosting to our visitors.
![]()
Hey no problem it’s great to be here.

Can you please share with us how Super Green Hosting started.
![]()
Super Green Hosting started back in 2007 when we stumbled upon a report stating that web hosting alone is responsible for 23 percent of global CO2 emissions in the ICT industry. That’s a big percentage and a heck of a lot of CO2. To put it into perspective, the web hosting industry produces more CO2 than the whole of Thailand or half of all countries in South America. We were fascinated by the stats and decided to look around to see what web hosts were doing about their carbon footprint, the truth is very few were taking any interest in their green ethics and there wasn’t a web hosting provider who was purely focused on being green. That’s where we came in!

Everything is going green these days, but how does a hosting company "go green"?
![]()
There are many ways web hosts can reduce their carbon footprint. The most effective way to do this is by switching to energy efficient servers that can actually reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%. This doesn’t just have a positive effect on your carbon footprint but also on your electricity bills! Another method of tackling your CO2 emissions in any business or industry is purchasing REC’s or as most people know them, renewable energy credits. Renewable energy credits are purchased to replace the electricity used to run your business, this new energy is produced by clean energy sources such as wind, wave and solar power and is 100% environmentally friendly.

Are wind power and other environment friendly power solutions as efficient as conventional power? In other words, will sites be affected by using green energy sources?
![]()
Not at all, this is a common misconception and a question that often arises within the support department at Super Green Hosting. Green electricity is no different from electricity produced in an electricity plant, there is absolutely no difference between the two apart from the ways in which they are produced. Green electricity can be produced from many sources as I said earlier, it is in fact the sources than can be unreliable. What I mean is that solar power is no good on a cloud day and wind turbines are no use when there is no wind to power them. This isn’t a problem though if you have a failsafe, obviously you cannot completely rely on wind turbines or solar power and switching to conventional methods of powering a data center is acceptable during these times.

How do you see the future of “going green” in the hosting industry?
![]()
I am confident that every industry is going to have to make sacrifices and we are going to see a huge rise in the number of green companies out there. The web hosting industry will be no different and I believe every leading web hosting provider will have to make an effort before they start losing customers to more environmentally friendly hosts.
![]()
What are your goals and where do you see Super Green Hosting in five years from now?
![]()
There is still plenty more that we plan to do with Super Green Hosting including participating in more green projects like the tree planting in the Amazon. We also want to offer our customers more ways to be green such as by purchasing their own green REC’s that they can proudly display on their website. In five years time I see Super Green Hosting being number one in everyone’s eyes when searching for a greener web hosting provider. As I said before, green industries are going to be huge as more and more people make the switch.

It was nice talking to you. Thanks for answering our questions and keep up the good work.
