Everything started out great with HostGator but they started having some major bandwidth/server issues. My websites would not load all the way, have huge delays, and sometimes have to click links multiple times to get them to go. I contacted their support several times and they would say an admin is working on this issue. Then they up and changed the server ip one of my sites was going to and caused the site to go offline. I contacted them again and they said I needed to change DNS to accommodate the new IP. I did this and 2 days later they had it back on the old IP. I would not recommend this hosting company to anyone.

I volunteer for a non profit, and we needed a new web hosting service. I called HostGator and selected the option for sales. While the "salesperson" (no way was this a true salesperson) answerd my questions and seemed knowledgeable, and even sent me a demo of their Site Builder application to check out, I wasn't blown away by them. But hey, they seemed to know what they were doing. So I signed us up and started trying to use the SiteBuilder application. Um...it's buggy. Things do not work the way they are supposed to. So I would call HostGator with questions. I was impressed at the always short wait time. Well...that's probably because they just try to get people off the phone ASAP to take the next call. The first person sounded like he was going to go look up some info about SiteBuilder for me, but then the call was disconnected. I called back, and the person who answered this time clearly sounded as if he didn't really care about his job at all. I said that SiteBuilder wasn't working the way it was supposed to, even according to its own Help documentation. He said they didn't support SiteBuilder, it's a third party application, and sent me SiteBuilder's support site. So I emailed SiteBuilder through the support site. They emailed me back and told me to contact my provider. I forwarded that reply to HostGator, and someone did write back with a halfhearted suggestion, but the upshot of it was that the SiteBuilder app is buggy and doesn't work the way it should, the developers of SiteBuilder weren't going to fix that, and HostGator couldn't fix it. Since I had specifically told HostGator that I didn't want to have to make changes to the site in HTML and re-upload the whole thing every time I needed to update the site content, I canceled the service. It was within the 45 day trial so we got a full refund. VERY disappointing, especially for a company that brags so much about it's great service.

Those two features (actually unlimted domains) make them my number one recommendation for startups who know they will be using more than one domain. Most of the hosts you recommend list that they have free setup, but it is ONLY free if you pay by the year. Dot 5 hosting also offers monthly billing with no setup fee, but they use VDeck, not CPanel. CPanel with Fantastico may be more useful to a small startup. Also, they limit your domains to 6 - good for many small startups, not so good for others. My last reason for continuing to use Hostgator, even when I COULD afford something else, is that I have experienced having my website shut down by two different hosts, due to security issues with scripts. The first host did not even reply to my inquiries as to why - they would not accept telephone inquiries about it, required email contact, and would not reply to my emails. When the same thing happened with Hostgator, they talked to me about it, and very quickly helped me resolve the problem so my site was functional again in the shortest possible time. I got real help, from real people, with a problem that occurs more often than many startup business owners realize. Uptime has been average, but support was exceptional. Just my perspective.
